Why Avoid Microplastics?

A WWF-commissioned study by the University of Newcastle found people may ingest up to 5 grams of plastic weekly, equal to a credit card, mainly through bottled and tap water. That adds up to 2,000 particles a week or 250 grams per year. The findings highlight the urgent health and environmental risks of plastic pollution. WWF calls for bans on single-use plastics like bags and microbeads, noting that government action remains insufficient despite global impact.

According to Ocean Conservancy, over 11 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean each year, adding to the 200 million metric tons already polluting marine environments. That’s equivalent to a garbage truck’s worth of plastic dumped into the ocean every minute, threatening ocean ecosystems around the globe.

An estimated 99% of plastics are made from fossil fuels, primarily oil and natural gas, according to the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL). Plastics production is tightly linked to the fossil fuel industry, with petrochemical feedstocks like ethane and propane driving both plastic creation and greenhouse gas emissions. As demand for plastic grows, so does fossil fuel extraction, fueling climate change alongside pollution.

Many of the products you use and consume every day—like toothpaste, shampoo, cleaning sprays, food containers, and even tea bags—have plastic-free alternatives that are safer for your body and the environment. From bamboo toothbrushes to refillable cleaning concentrates and bar shampoos with no hidden microplastics, small swaps can lead to big change. Choosing plastic-free isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress, and there are more options than ever to help you start.
